Mid West Bridal Exhibition 2012.

This was the first bridal exhibition I ever went to. I was there to take photos for ilovelimerick.com.
The models were from Celia Holman Lee's agency. I've worked with these girls before and they are absolutely brilliant. Ilovelimerick.com has a flickr page now so I copied the slideshow from the page. In July I finally launched my Facebook photo page: http://www.facebook.com/digitaldolfphotography
I started setting the page up in October 2010 but it had been dormant since then. Now it's up and running.

As a photographer I'm now officially a member of the ilovelimerick.com team and my photos for ilovelimerick.com can be seen on the dedicated facebook page as well as on my photography page. In time I will post some here on my blog too.
September has been hectic so far. Fashion shows, live gigs of rock bands, the Limerick Pride week: every event has it's own challenges as regards light and surroundings. I'm enjoying it though.

This is the Atlantic Ocean seen from the cliffs of Moher, County Clare on 13-08-2011. It was a fairly dry day but rain showers were building up. On June the 5th my girlfriend and myself went to Sicily on a two weeks' holiday for the first time.

The first ten days we travelled around by car (a tiny Fiat Panda) and the last 4 days we spent in Palermo with only one trip outside of the city to Cefalù.

Sicily is an island with stunningly beautiful scenery, great beaches, interesting and friendly cities and towns. The food is amazing but what makes Sicily really nice is the people. They are simply wonderful. We met lovely, friendly, chatty and hospitable people there. I hope that some of the people who have my card, will visit my blog and read this. Thank you for making our stay on your beautiful island even nicer. We will never forget the hospitality and friendliness that you have shown us.

The 30th of April 2011. This was the first ever concert in the recently covered milkmarket in Limerick City, organised by Dolans, Limerick.

University of Limerick Fashion Society launch

These are some photos I took for ilovelimerick.com. The University of Limerick fashion society was launched on the 24th of February with a fashion show. The proceeds went to charity.
All the models are students and the dance group is a University of Limerick dance group.
The night was presented by Richard Lynch from ilovelimerick.com and the always beautiful Celine was the drag performer.

Just found out that my blog looks horrible in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The text is not in the right place in some posts.
It looks fine in Firefox and Opera. I haven't checked other browsers yet but I recommend viewing this blog in Firefox or Opera.
More photos coming soon. At the moment I'm in Portugal and I've already taken some beautiful shots in Lisboa.
Thanks to all those people from all over the world who have stopped by to look at my blog. I've had vistors from 94 countries so far. I'm curious to see if and when I will reach 100 countries. :)

The Great Limerick Run 2010

These are some of the photos that I took for ILOVELIMERICK.COM of the great Limerick run which took place on Sunday the 2nd of May 2010. It was the first full marathon in 25 years. There was also a half marathon and a 10km run. From top to bottom: The first shot is taken at the start of the full marathon. The second shot shows the winner of the full marathon. The third and fourth are shots of the start from the 10km, taken from a crane. The fifth shots shows runners keeping warm. The last two shots are crowd shots taken at the finish.

I was invited to a CD presentation of Daithy Rua's new CD: "Black Fox" in O' Ceallaigh's pub in the city of Groningen. Daithi is a musician and songwriter originally from Offaly but now living in Belgium. He is a nice guy with a great voice. His CD is absolutely lovely. One of the cities I really want to go back to is Istanbul. I met some friends, two lovely ladies, Güler and Esen, I had made through the internet for the first time in person. We became friends in real life as well. Evrim, my friend who is a teacher of English in the Black Sea region, had come with us to Istanbul for a few days. I met with her brother, his girlfriend and a few friends and also with Esen's family. I also met Güler's teacher of English, Roger: an Englishman who lives in Istanbul. We went to a teagarden several times, smoking a waterpipe while sipping apple tea, eating simit (kind of bread) and chatting. What more can one want.
All my Turkey shots are dedicated to all the lovely people I met in Turkey. I will carry all those moments, the country and the people in my heart forever.

About the shots: Eminönü is an area that really comes to live at night with all the food stalls where they sell traditionally prepared fish.

I took a little break from posting on my blog. I was still posting but mainly event photos on Facebook.
Time to make a fresh start (pun intended) in 2010. We had some lovely frosty mornings and last Saturday, I went outside and just took a few photos.
For those of you who are wondering about some of the shots. Well the clothes pegs are obvious, then there is a shot of light falling on part of a iced up spiders web through the gap of a fence and there is one of an iced up drop on a spiders web, well, what's left of the web anyway. All the shots were taken outside of my house.

Türkiye - At the market

Back to Turkey. These are shots taken at the market in Devrek. The people were so friendly and hospitable. I learned some Turkish so I could tell them that I'm from the Netherlands but live in Ireland and say some polite things in Turkish. They kept on giving me food to try and trying to chat to me. Some of them had some German and I do too. So with English, German and a few words in Turkish I was able to tell them that I think Turkey is a great country and that I love the food and the people. It made them happy and their friendliness made me happy. Such a great experience. (Click on a photo to see it bigger)

I just noticed that my flickr slide widgets are not showing any photos anymore. I went to the widget page and tried to make a new slide show but.....no luck. :(

I will probably just have to post a few photos from the series and then provide the link to my flickr site where you can see the rest of the series. What a shame. The slide shows were great and a nice addition to my blogs.

It will take me a while to get it all organised as I'm also in the process of repairing a computer.

These evening shots were taken in Zonguldak in the Black Sea region. Zonguldak is a mining town with a harbour. The black Sea region is the less visited side of Turkey which is totally incomprehensible as it is such a beautiful part of the country. And I've seen only a tiny part of it. I watched the Turkish movie Sonbahar the other day (bought it on DVD) with scenery from the far north east of the Black Sea region which is also stunningly beautiful. I'm back from a two week stay in Turkey. What a wonderful country. I spent one week near Zonguldak in the Black Sea area and a week in Istanbul. And now for something completely different.

Don't know what has gotten into me lately. This sentence, the one I used on the photo, just popped into my head and I knew I had to do something with it. I'm not on any drugs, I swear. Well, coffee and dark chocolate but that's not so bad now, is it?

Taking the shot of the car was the easy part. Editing out the car's background, looking for a good sign, editing out the background and putting together another galaxy was most of the work. I had a bit of a chuckle putting this together. I hope it brings a smile to your face as well.

From the bottom up: moody view of the A-kerk (A-church), inside my favourite grand café 't Feithhuis, the Martini tower, bikes and buildings and the only one with a bit of colour: office buildings alongside a canal.

Hooray!!!!! I've passed the 50 mark. So far people from 53 different countries have visited my blog. Great. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to look at my photos.

It would be nice though if people would leave a comment every now and then. Even when you don't have a blogger account you can still leave a comment. And I don't mind if you leave it in a language other than English. As long as it is in western European script, I will figure it out. It doesn't have to be an essay either. Just a little message, a few words......... please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and thanks to the people who did reply, especially powergirl and eosforever who've commented on a lot of threads. Thanks a lot. It's appreciated. And thanks a lot for the compliments as well.

Barcelona Mercè festival

The Mercè festival, which takes place in September, is Barcelona's biggest festival.

Barcelonians are crazy people :) They dress up as devils and go around with fireworks in the streets, spraying it all over the innocent bystanders.

It was actually great fun. I first kept my distance a bit but couldn't get any good shots. I was only dressed in jeans and a t-shirt while most of the people standing close were wearing some kind of protection like jackets with hoodies or scarfs around their head. At some stage I just braved it and went on the street, right in the middle of it. The camera protected my face more or less while the UV filter protected the lens. I felt burning on my shoulders a few times and after the event I found out that I had burn holes in my t-shirt. Ah well, it was worth it.

There was also a fireworks display on the hill Montjuïc which was absolutely beautiful and lasted for a long time. There are also a few shots of that display in this slideshow. Just click on one of the photos to go to the set on my flickr page and see the bigger photos.

A friend of ours, Denise, was interested in posing for a portrait shoot. We had discussed it ages ago but it never happened. So, a few nights ago she came around for dinner and we did a little photo shoot afterwards. Nothing fancy; just a low key, black backdrop, simple lighting shoot. Here are some results.

Napoli 2006 (dedicated to Ombretta)

This set of photos is dedicated to one of the beautiful girls from Napoli; an on-line friend who I first met in the ESL café, where she calls herself ombretta, and who is now one of my MSN contacts and Facebook friends as well. The internet is so much fun. :) I promised her that I would show a few photos that I took there. So, here they are. Mostly tourist scenery shots and one nice portrait of an older gentleman. I thought he had a great face and with hands and feet I asked him if I could take a photo of him. He didn't mind. I already posted a few people shots from Napoli, (click here to see them) but for some reason I didn't post any landscape shots. I so want to go back to Napoli and surroundings. It is a great city and the people are absolutely lovely. Ombretta: I hope you like the photos (and all the other visitors as well of course)

Camera gear used for these shots: Canon 350D and the Canon Pro1 compact. I didn't have the 30D and the 40D yet.

Hi there.

First of all it's nice to see that my blogs get so many hits from all over the world. Please don't be shy and leave a message every now and then. If you can't do it in English, do it in your own language. I will find someone to translate it for me if I can't understand it. :)

A little while ago I had a bit of a set back because one of my external photo harddrives broke down. Of course I had the originals all backed up on DVD but the edited ones I hadn't.

As a result of that I have to re-edit a lot of photos. At the moment I'm concentrating on a few series that I shot during the Limerick Gay Pride week 2008 and the alternative miss Limerick pageant which took place last Saturday. You can see some of the shots on my Limerick blog and the rest will follow soon. So make sure you check back once in a while.

On this blog there will be more photos from Italy and also photos from Barcelona. I was there during the Mercè festival and got some spectacular shots. So do check back on a regular basis.

Well, by up and running I mean that I started the blog and I have one "new" set of photos up and a few that are on this blog as well.

I know that a few people have probably been looking out for the photos I took during the Riverfest festival in Limerick. Don't worry, I will put them up.
The plan is to make a seperate Limerick blog where I will show all the photos relating to Limerick. It is in the pipeline. There I will show a compilation of a few years Riverfest. It'll mainly be people shots of the Riverfests. There will also be general photos taken in Limerick city and county. I will keep ye informed.

Munster Rugby (Heineken Cup).

It was a bit of work but I edited photos I took in O'Connell street, Limerick during the Munster Rugby Heineken Cup finals.

The atmosphere in O'Connell street, Limerick was great. The event was well organised with two big screens. Friendly Gardaí and stuarts made sure that everything went smoothly. I saw one girl pass out and she received aid within seconds. She was fine afterwards.
Even the weather was brilliant.
It was also a great photo opportunity even though the light conditions weren't ideal.
I hope you enjoy the photos and that those who weren't there get a taste of the atmosphere.

Last Friday Kieran, a friend of ours, had invited us to a folk concert by his cousin Siobhán O'Brien in Dolan's Warehouse, Limerick City. Of course I brought the photo gear along and took some shots.
These shots were all taken with my 50mm 1.2 L lens at ISO 800 and ISO 1600. (some of ye might be interested in this kind of information)

I really want to go back there. It's such a great city.
I decided to change these shots into duotone because in my opinion it brings out the atmosphere the way I felt it when we were there.
The bottom two shots are of Fado singers in a local establishment in Alfama, the quarter of Lisbon where Fado has its roots.

Today I added the series "save it for a rainy day" but I also added a photo to landscapes 1 (Nov 2007). You can see it when you scroll down. It's the first photo of Muckross house with the tree in front.
I corrected keystoning in the second shot (Muckross house up closer).
Keystoning is a distorting effect of converging verticals, often in buildings.
It is the result of using a wide angle lens. I corrected this in Photoshop.

I know, I know, I really have to come up with more original titles. But like it says in the title: this post is about people again and a few shots are posed while the others are candid. I just love taking candid shots of people going about their business but sometimes I try my hand at posed shots. You can probably expect more posed shots in future posts. I found a few willing victims who wouldn't mind posing for me so all I have to do is get my act together and organise a few shoots. In the meantime I hope you'll enjoy these photos.

Hurling finals 2007 (events local)

Hurling is a Gaelic/Irish sport. It is very popular in Ireland and Limerick made it to the All Ireland finals in 2007. I watched the match in the city on a big screen in the main street. More Prague photos.

The last series "Prague by night" was done in November but I had to redo it because the photos wouldn't open as a bigger size for some reason. That's fixed now but it shows up as sent in January. Anyway, here are some more Prague impressions. Prague is one of my favourite cities. I normally prefer to be reasonably close to the sea and Prague is in the middle of Europe. So how come I like it so much? Well, it has the river Vlatava flowing through it which makes up for it being landlocked.

I was thinking of what to post next. So many photos waiting to be edited and posted. A lot of people shots too. I decided to post a few night shots I took in Prague.
It is often said that you should take night shots when there is still some light in the sky but I like to isolate the buildings with a totally black sky. I also like to do some photoshop work to get the right mood that I more or less felt when shooting them. I'm curious to see what you think of them.

Landscapes 1.

I haven't posted any landscapes yet so I will show you some autumn shots from Ireland.
These photographs were all shot in the south-west of Ireland.
The first one is of the Paps mountains in County Cork. They are called the Paps of Danu which means the Goddess Danu's boobs. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see why.
The other photos were all shot around Killarney in County Kerry, with the exception of photos 6 and 7 (from the bottom up) which were taken near Kenmare in County Kerry.
The house in the 8th and 9th photo is Muckross house.
I only added the last 3 top photos on April 30th 2008.
They were also taken at the in September 2007 like the other shots.
I just hadn't edited them yet.

Alternative Miss Limerick.

Hi everyone.
In September my girlfriend and I went to the Alternative Miss Limerick: a drag pageant.
We were there to cheer on a participant we know and who won in the end. It was a great night.
I posted the whole series in a Flickr account and added the link in the top right hand corner of the page. Click on the link to see the series.

One of the things that keep fascinating me is reflections. Sunglasses make for interesting reflections in combination with portrait shots of the person behind them. I showed one in the first people post. Here are three more. The first one was taken in Florence, the second one in Pompeii and the third one in Barcelona (from the bottom up)

The 4th photo is of a street entertainer taking a break and was taken in Lisbon.
The 5th photo was also taken in Lisbon. Both photographs were done up a bit in Photoshop.
The 6th and 7th photos were taken in Naples. I liked the way the smoke becomes part of the photo.

Nature, macro photography.

Besides having the right equipment for the job, macro photography takes a lot of patience and determination. The nice thing about it is that you don't have to travel far. These shots were taken in our garden.

People 5 (events, local, St. Patrick's day parade)

This year was the first time I was able to attend the parade in Limerick. Normally I'm in the Netherlands for Paddy's Day.
Most of these photos were taken at the assembly point just before the start of the parade.
The traditional music group and the fire eater were fringe activities on the day.

The city of Limerick is quite a happening place. One venue that has a lot to offer is the Belltable theatre/cinema and art centre: http://www.belltable.ie/ These photographs were taken before the screening of the Rocky Horror picture show on 04-02-2007.

People 3 (abstracted)

These candid photos are more or less abstracted.

The first three were taken in Ballybunion, County Kerry. The first two are surfers and I had to get my feet wet to get them.
In the third shot you can see people with hurleys. Hurling is an Irish sport.

The fourth and fifth shot were taken during a Life guard training competition. The organisers weren't too happy with me taking shots so I only post a few that I think they wouldn't have any problems with. In these two shots you see people diving for sticks in a sprint competition. I wanted to get the speed and the determination of the contestants.

Continuing with the candid shots. The first post is at the bottom again.

The first two shots were taken in Florence, Italy. I like to do some work in Photoshop sometimes to give the shots that little bit extra or to put more emphasis on parts of the photograph.

The third shots was taken in Portugal. Turned it to black and white and then gave it a slightly warm tone.

Photo number 4 was taken in Florence, Italy. It has the obvious title: "pasta".

Photo number 5 was taken in Florence, Italy.
My partner and I were out and about at night when we spotted this girl with her parents and sister I think.
For this photo I used the flash as it was too dark to get a decent shot otherwise. Afterwards we had a bit of a chat. She turned out to be American and she gave me her verbal permission to use this photo.
What I really like about this shot is her pose and the neon in the background.

One of the most interesting subjects in photography is people. I take a lot of candid shots of people in the streets, at festivals or other occasions. Taking candid shots is a great way of meeting people and making friends. Reactions are mostly positive and subjects often ask me for copies. I have had very nice social encounters with people from all over the world through my photography. I've only had a few negative experiences where I could sense that people didn't like me taking shots. Sometimes people turn away. When I sense that they're not happy about it, I normally delete the shots. Only once it happened that I was actually asked to delete shots while I was monitored deleting them. My photos are always respectful and will never show any subjects in any compromising way. Legally you're allowed to take photos of people in public areas and show them without their permission, as long as the photos are not compromising in any way of course. For commercial use you have to get a signed permission form.

Some of my candid work I will show here. The first photo is at the bottom working up to the top.

The first photograph was taken in Prague. I think it is interesting because of the pose and the hair. You don't always need a face to make a shot interesting.

The second photo was taken in Florence, Italy. I was standing downhill from these people who were admiring the sights. I love the dynamics in this photo.
Together with a few other photographs, this one was part of a group exhibition in Friar's Gate Arts Centre, Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland.

Photo number three was taken in Barcelona at the Sagrada Familia. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. I spotted the strange combination of dress and shoes and took a few shots. She saw me and lifted the dress a bit more so the shoes were showing even more. Adorable girl. Lucky man who's married her.

The 4th photo was taken in Florence, Italy. It is often easier to take photos of women than it is of men. My partner Orla, thinks that is because women are more used to being admired. Anyway, this gentleman was standing beside me and I noticed the reflection in his sunglasses. I took a few shots and of course he noticed me. He asked me why I had taken his photo. I explained myself and showed him this shot. He was really enthusiastic about it and we had a nice chat.

Photo 5: I'm a little reluctant of posting photos of children on a blog but this is such a brilliant shot, it had to be included. The angle and the crop make it a dynamic shot. My partner, who is a painter, loves this shot. I'm heavily influenced by her way of painting people and she tells me that she is influenced by my work. She also uses photographs I take for her paintings. Who knows; we might have a joined exhibition some day. As soon as she has some shots of paintings on the www again, I will post the link.

Welcome to Digital Dolf's Photography Blog.
My name is Dolf Patijn. I'm a Dutchman, living in the south-west of Ireland.
I started of as an analogue photographer with a 35mm Canon AE1 and
T70 SLR camera. I had my own darkroom where I printed black and white photographs.
I also took a lot of slides.
In 2000 I bought my first digital camera and in 2006 I bought my first Digital SLR camera.
I now shoot with a Canon 350D and a Canon 30D with different very good quality lenses (L lenses).

In this Blog you can see samples of my digital photography. All the photographs you see here are scaled down in size and quality. The originals are a lot bigger and of higher quality.
